Another nice San Pablo bass. This hog went 11.4 lbs and bit the Castaic trout right in front of an audience of trout fishermen :-) I'm sure they all thought I was crazy throwing such a big lure...... until I pulled this one out !
One of the young guys who works at the marina said he had seen many big bass brought in to be weighed, but he had never actually seen one being caught until this one.

This big girl went 14.2 lbs. She had a really large frame, and therefor she photographed well, but she was actually not very thick across the back. With a little more beef, and a couple more hatchery trout in her belly, she could have easily weighed 16 plus lbs !
....... but I'm not complaining :-)
She bit the Castaic trout on a slow retrieve just under the surface.

This is my latest personal best bass, which went 15 lb 12.8 oz on the certified scale at San Pablo Dam Res.
Amazingly, this fish was glued to one small spot all day long, as if she was spawning.... but it is almost Sept ! I fished for her off and on all day long, but could not get her to go on any of my normal big fish baits (trout lures). Finally at about 5:30 pm I started thinking >>> If this fish is acting like a spawning fish, I am going to fish for her like I would fish for a spawning fish. I put on the tiny Castaic Shad, on medium-light gear, with a 1/4 oz worm weight on the line, made a cast, and hopped it to "her spot", then twitched it rapidly. The first time she acted excited about it ! Second time she hit it and got one tiny hook of the number 4 treble right in the bone on her lip.
Can't wait for my 17 plus ! :-)

This San Pablo Dam Res. hog went 13.5 lbs, and bit the Castaic trout. This was one of those fish that was thick from side to side, but not back to belly. Unfortunately, that never shows in a photo..... Oh well, still a good one, and I trust my Berkeley 50 lb digital scale.

After not having caught a double digit bass for 6 weeks, but having caught a 14 lb Channel cat the evening before, I decided to go for catfish instead.
I had baited my micro-light rod with 4 smashed, and dead night crawlers (to keep them from tangling the line around the hook), then casted them out and let them sit. A little bit later I stick a good fish, but after a minute or so, it does not feel like a Catfish. I'm thinking, it must be a Carp. Suddenly, it runs for the surface and makes a wild head slinging jump...... and its a BASS ! And it's a HOG ! It turns out to be a 13.0 lb beauty, my biggest on the micro-light.
It just goes to show, as long as you have a line in the water, anything is possible !

This clean healthy 11.7 lb'er bit a "wad-o-crawlers" in about 18 feet of water. She immediately made a screaming run for the surface, and then made a vertical leap with her tail clearing the water by at least 2 ft !
I'm not usually this far off, but at that moment I would have bet she was 14 lbs if she was an ounce ! I guess I had the "Roland Martin Syndrome" :-)
Another great micro-light catch though.

My first double digit for 2003, a 10.2 lb'er from Rancho Seco, caught on a Castaic baby bluegill.

Yours truly, with a 12.1 lb Rancho Seco hog which bit a Castaic baby sunfish fished in 10 feet of water. She fought really hard, and eventually buried in the weeds, where I had to go to her and scoop 50 lbs of weeds along with the fish ! But the end result was all good :-)

Here I am with a 10.0 Berryssa bass.
Great story to this one.... I had been having a very tough trip, and had no confidence, so I decided to leave early. When I got to the ramp, there were at least a dozen boats ahead of me, and a half dozen more trying to launch !
I decided to park my boat on the side, about 50 feet from the ramp while I waited my turn. Minutes later two big bass (this was the little one :-) came up to look at me ! I flipped out a live dad and caught this one about 15 minutes later in front of a very large and excited audience :-)
