This enormous "floater" weighed between 19.0 and 19.2 lbs the first time we weighed it........ but I could not find my digital camera, so we dumped it back in and moved away. Then a little bit later I found my camera, hidden amongst my tackle. We then went back and photographed it, and weighed it again, at which point it weighed between 18.7 and 19.0 lbs ! Most of us believed that San Pablo could produce a fish (or several) like this, but here is solid proof !
By the way, some workers in the marina also had found this fish earlier this same day and weighed it on there calibrated scale at 19.0 lbs !
I don't think this fish had been dead too long, as it was in pretty good shape, even with the warm water, and hot air temp. Also, it did not have a real strong smell....... yet.
Another point of interest is this......... I have heard that a bass begins to lose weight immediately after death, presumably because the pressure from gasses in side the fishes body, forces heavier fluids out. Hmmmm. Might have recently been a 20 plus !
In any case, the biggest bass ever caught at San Pablo Dam Res.... Or Nor Cal for that matter, was 18 lbs 11 ounces, therefore this fish would have been a record, had she been caught.
Personally, I believe this fish, and many others, have, and will live there entire lives (after reaching say 13 lbs or so) never getting caught, and eventually dying of old age.
One other note: It is very unlikely that a normal fish (read: one which is not a genetic fluke) is swimming around in San Pablo, which weighs more than 22-4 on a daily basis. However, it is very possible, if not probable, that a fish like this one, could go on a trout eating spree, gaining as much as 3 or 4 lbs. in one feeding, and at least temporarily, becoming a world record Bass !!!
Just amazing.
